Located on the northwest coast of Sicily lies the small town of Caronia. The position of the town is between the sea and a railroad. At the beginning of 2004, some strange things began to happen, both in the town and the surrounding area. There were bizarre electrical activity and a string of unexplained fires.
During the early months of the year, there were reports of many objects suddenly bursting into flames with no apparent cause. These included chairs, unconnected electrical wires, mattresses, and televisions.
Other strange things that began to happen were car alarms going off without cause, mobile phones ringing when nobody was calling, and cars locking themselves for no reason. For a short while, these incidents stopped. Again, there was no explanation of why this activity had ceased. However, the activities resumed within a few weeks and continue to strike periodically.
Locals have given a variety of theories as to why this is happening. Some of these theories have included everything from UFOs to poltergeists. Various authorities have been unable to provide an explanation, such as the telephone companies, representatives from the railway, government officials and scientists.
One possible cause put forward by experts is that underground volcanic activity is causing the release of electrical charges. However, it remains unclear whether this is a realistic possibility or simply a theory. According to the Sicilian Civil Protection Agency, the cause of the fires and other unexplained incidents is static electrical activity but what is causing this activity is a mystery.
