No, you did not misread the title. Molise will actually pay you to move there! The President of Molise, Donato Toma, told The Guardian they are offering almost $800 a month for three consecutive years to individuals who move there.

Where is Molise Located?

Molise is a region of Southern Italy a few hours east of Rome. It is geographically breathtaking and full of historical culture. The region is mountainous and is along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Therefore, it sounds almost too good to be true.

So why does this region of Italy want to pay people to live there?

Molise is underpopulated and the goal is to fill the villages. The population of Molise is declining rapidly. Statistics show that the region’s current population is approximately 305,000. Since 2014, it has lost about 9,000 people. The only catch is that you must open a business.

Donato Toma, the president of Molise stated “We wanted to do more, we wanted people to invest here. They can open any sort of activity: a bread shop, a stationery shop, a restaurant, anything. It’s a way to breathe life into our towns while also increasing the population.”

Furthermore, Toma explained that it is more than just an effort to increase the population. He announced that each town with fewer than 2,000 residents would receive $11,070 to build infrastructure. He wants to give individuals a reason to stay.

Other towns in Italy are also trying to encourage residents to move there. A town called Ollolai is selling homes for $1.00!
