Coronavirus Updates Live: Over 16 Million Quarantined in Italy

A quarter of Italy's population is currently on lockdown after the government took measures to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus.

A quarter of Italy’s population is currently on lockdown after the government took measures to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus.

Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte signed a decree forcing approximately 16 million residents into quarantine.

The affected regions of Italy include Venice, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Rimini, Pesaro and Urbino, Alessandria, Asti, Novara, Verbano Cusio Ossola, Vercelli, Padua, and Treviso.

There has been an alarming increase of 1,200 cases in Italy in a 24-hour time period. There are currently 5,800 cases of Covid-19 confirmed in the country and 230 deaths.

“We are facing an emergency,” Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said in a recent news conference.
