A Sweet Celebration: Exploring Italian Holiday Desserts by Region

Italy is famous for its cuisine and dessert is no exception. From north to south, each Italian region has it’s own unique sweet treats, each derived from local traditions and ingredients. Here are some favorite holiday desserts by region:

Napoli and Campania: Sfogliatella (cover photo) is the prize of this area. A flaky, multilayered pastry, usually filled with a ricotta cream, candied citrus peel and cinnamon, this dessert is a true representation of the artistry of the region. They can be enjoyed with powdered sugar or a few drops of honey. Sfogliatella is a crowd favorite.

Calabria: Pignolata is a sweet and sticky pastry made from small fried dough balls, coated in honey or sugar glaze, usually with sprinkles in festive holiday colors.

Tuscana: Ricciarelli are almond based cookies, chewy in the center and covered in powdered sugar. They are primarily made during the holiday season.

Liguria: Pandolce, or sweetbread, is a traditional Genovese fruitcake made with candied fruit, nuts and spices. It is a must have at holiday tables throughout Liguria. 

Milano and Verona: Panettone and Pandoro. Panettone is a fruit filled dome shaped bread from Milan and Pandoro is a golden, star shaped cake from Verona. Both have gained popularity and are served throughout Italy during the holidays.

Sicilia: Cassata Siciliana is a rich and decadent dessert that consists of sponge cake layered with sweetened ricotta, candied fruit and marzipan.

Friuli Venezia Giulia: Strucchi are a type of pastry filled with a mixture of walnuts, honey and spices enjoyed during the Christmas season.

Lombardia: Torrone is a nougat made from honey, sugar and toasted nuts. It can be hard or soft and most often, made during the holidays.

Sardegna: Sebadas are deep fried pastries filled with pecorino cheese and  lemon zest, drizzled with honey. They are made especially for holiday celebrations.

These are just a few examples of the delicious and diverse holiday desserts that can be found across Italy. Each region’s unique heritage of flavors and customs shine through in its festive sweets, making Italian holiday celebrations a wondrous experience for the palette. Buone Feste!
