Epifania del Signore: Vatican City
In the holiest place in Italy, Rome, it is fitting that a historically, prominent Christian holiday is celebrating in this city. The day of this celebration the Pope hosts morning mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. Once the mass is over, the participants dress in ancient costumes, decorated horses prance, a lively band plays, and flag throwers are present in this medieval parade. The people all follow “the Three Wise Men” throughout the streets.
La Cavalcata dei Magi: Florence
In Florence, things are done similarly. The people participating wear medieval costumes and meet out of Palazzo Pitti. From there, they sing and dance the streets of the city and end in Piazza Duomo. There, a nativity and three fired canons await to end the celebration. To conclude the whole night, Piazza Duomo holds a ceremonial mass.
Regata delle Befane: Venice
Saving my favorite for last, is Venice. Every year, Venice hosts a single-oared regatta race that begins in Venice’s Grand Canal. But what makes this one my favorite is what the participants wear. 50 men dress up as La Befana, as seen in the picture. Amazing. Can you imagine seeing this in person? Anyways, the race ends under the Rialto Bridge and a giant stocking full of sweets and other goodies await for the winner. If you do not get this reward, read the origin story of La Befana, because this is gold.
