Several changes and improvements can be expected for travelers in Italy in 2024! A hugely anticipated development will be the opening of an airport along the Amalfi Coast in the summer of this year. The Salerno-Costa d’Amalfi airport is a huge initiative that is projected to service up to a million visitors per year. Typically those seeking the Amalfi coast must fly into Naples or Rome airport and drive hours to their destination. The opening of the Amalfi coast airport will alleviate some of the traffic from those airports and bring more business to the area.
Another improvement will be the reopening of the Italy-France rail line, also in the summer of 2024. A landslide caused major damage and forced its closure for repair last year. The Frejus railway tunnel, the oldest in Europe, was blocked by over 10,000 cubic meters of rock from heavy storms in the summer of 2023.
A new rail network has also been designed to facilitate tourism to smaller towns and destinations. The line currently has three different levels of service from slower paced to luxury. Routes travel from Rome to either Cortina D’Ampezzo, Metaponto in Basilicata or Pompeii and Milan to Livorno/Genova.
Not only is Italy adding train routes but they are starting a new initiative of being powered by environmentally conscious hydrogen. These zero emission trains are also set to take off in 2024 in the Lombardia region. Fourteen hydrogen trains will replace an entire fleet of diesel trains, costing almost 400 million Euro.
Several other convenient and traveler friendly routes throughout Europe will be added as well this year connecting destinations such as Florence, Barcelona, Brussels, Zurich, Cologne and Hamburg.
Now that you know about all of these convenient travel advantages in Italy this summer, what are you waiting for to book your ticket?
