Origins & Historical Significance

Saint Valentine’s Day is a widely recognized as the feast day of love and affection but it actually holds a special place in Italian culture. It intertwines historical traditions with modern celebrations. Saint Valentine’s Day originated in the Roman Empire. While several legends surround Saint Valentines, the most well-known one represents him as a priest in the 3rd century who performed marriages for soldiers forbidden to marry under Roman law. According to tradition, Valentine was executed for his actions on February 14th and this is where he became the patron saint of lovers.

Italy, being the cradle of Roman Civilization, has a strong connection to the origins of Valentine’s Day. The day is not only a celebration of lovers but it is also a reflection of Italy’s rich history and contribution to the spread of traditions around the world. 

Traditional Celebrations

In Italy, Saint Valentine’s Day was traditionally a day where couples expressed their love for each other through baci, or kisses, small tokens of affections, and handwritten love letters. This tradition has its roots in the Italian love tradition of the Middle Ages, where chivalrous acts and poetic expressions of love were highly valued. One of the most enduring symbols of Valentine’s Day in Italy is the city of Verona, home to Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. Every year, Verona hosts a series of events around Valentine’s Day. Including the “Verona in Love” festival, where the city is adorned with lights and colors, and love is celebrated in the squares and streets. And they have a giant heart in the heart of the square!
