On Wednesday morning, a massive sinkhole suddenly formed on a Naples road, engulfing two vehicles, including one that was carrying passengers. This indecent occurred in the city’s Vomero district at around 4 a.m., trapping a car with two young men inside who were on their way back from celebrating their university exams.
According to a report, one of the occupants recounted how a tree toppled onto their car just as it fell into the sinkhole, which then burst a pipe, leading to the hole rapidly filling with water. Social media videos captured the frantic efforts of the passengers to flee the car amidst a deluge of water.
The Naples mayor pinpointed the cause of the sinkhole to the city’s neglected sewer systems. Despite the perilous situation, the two men only sustained minor injuries, thanks to the prompt assistance of the Campania regiment of the Italian military. These soldiers successfully rescued the men.
The second vehicle affected by the sinkhole was parked and not in use at the time.
This event is not an isolated case, however, of a sinkhole in Naples; a similar incident was reported last month in the Via Manzoni area of the city, where a sewage pipe collapse was documented.
