As we observe the second Sunday of Lent, Christians around the world are called to reflect upon the meaning of this period of sacrifice and its value to our faith. During this season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, let us also keep in mind the positive and progressive message given as inspiration by Pope Francis for the 2024 Lenten season: “Through the Desert, God Leads us to Freedom.”
Pope Francis goes on to explain that, “Lent is a season of conversion, a time of freedom.” He invites us embrace the greatness and good we are capable of and by doing so, we will find our freedom as sons and daughters of God.
Many feel restrained by their circumstances or situations such as financial struggles, illness, addictions, loss, unhappiness, etc. This is the considered the darkness or the desert. Seeking God’s guidance and personal goodness to escape the desert will lead us to new found freedom from these restraints and a deeper relationship with the Father.
The Lenten motivational message of positivity and hope is applicable to anyone at any stage of life. May Pope Francis’ words truly inspire everyone to begin their own journey of freedom, renewed in their relationship with God.
