Every year, over a quarter million visitors come to see the statue of Juliet in the city of love, Verona, Italy. Tourists are captivated by her tragic story of true love with Romeo from William Shakespeare’s play. The story was based upon an ancient Italian legend based on aristocrats from Verona also mentioned in Dante’s Divine Comedy named the Capulets (Cappello) and the Montagues. “Juliet’s House”, as it it often called, can still be visited today on Via Cappello and offers excited sightseers a view of the romantic balcony that is remembered for swoon worthy interactions between the lovers. Fun fact however, there is not one single balcony scene in the original Shakespeare script!

The superstition and attraction for all who visit Juliet is that those who rub her right breast will receive good luck and true love! There are daily lines as crowds await their turn to pose with the beautiful Juliet and perform their good luck in love ritual. The statue is made of bronze and it is believed that the sweat and oils from people’s hands are deteriorating the precious metal, resulting in a small hole. This is the second time the statue has been damaged by tourists. The original statue which was enjoyed by visitors for more than 40 years was replaced in 2014. Plans are being made to repair the statue and discussions are underway for future handling of this highly revered monument.

Behind Juliet is a wall covered in graffiti and love notes, a beautiful backdrop to the bronze art piece. Local authorities created removable panels on the wall so that it can be easily cleaned and cleared for new visitors. This is also a highly favored way of wishing for love with Juliet’s blessing.
