Easter Egg Envy!

Most Italian Americans have fond memories of waking up on Easter morning excited to see giant pastel eggs displayed for them to open! Our non-Italian friends wished for these eggs and were always amazed by the size, hoping to get a taste! These giant “uovo di Pasqua” or Easter eggs are the highlight of the day for Italian children and they look forward to opening the large chocolate eggs to not only enjoy, but also to find out what the “sorpresa” or surprise is hidden within. Each egg contains a toy, gadget or even items as high end as jewelry depending on the price point of the egg. The excitement of discovering the “sorpresa” is half the fun of opening the egg!

The tradition of the Easter egg in Italy began in the 19th century and represents Christian symbolism of resurrection and new life. The switch to chocolate eggs from real eggs is a more recent change due to the popularity of chocolate in European countries. Gifting these decorative wrapped eggs is seen as a sign of affection and love. In fact, children often receive several in different flavors and sizes. This gesture of well wishing reinforces the idea of rebirth and solidifying relationships. Therefore, it is the perfect gift from a godparent, grandparent, aunt or uncle. 

This is a memorable, fun and delicious tradition to keep alive for future generations!

Fun fact: The world’s largest chocolate Easter Egg was made in Tosca, Italy and recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Measuring 34 feet 1.05 feet high and 64 ft 3.65 inches wide, this enormous egg weighed 7,200 kg! That’s as much as 2 adult orca whales! This egg set the record for tallest and heaviest chocolate egg in 2011, making it the envy of the every other country!
