Terror Alert In Italy During Easter After Moscow Attack

Italy decided to step up surveillance in crowded areas as the Easter holidays approach, following the recent shooting of a concert hall in Moscow. The National committee for public security, chaired by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, reached this decision today.

In light of the upcoming Easter holidays, the committee emphasized the need to enhance anti-terrorism monitoring across Italy. This includes increasing surveillance at popular tourist destinations and other “sensitive sites.” This committee stressed the importance of ongoing monitoring efforts by law enforcement and intelligence agencies, both online and offline to identify potential security risks within the country.

The decision to bolster surveillance came in response to the terrorist attack in Moscow, where armed individuals attacked a concert hall, resulting in numerous casualties. Despite this incident, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reassured the public that Italy currently faces “no concrete risk.” He affirmed that Italian security and law enforcement agencies are vigilant and prepared to prevent any potential attacks.

Tajani urged citizens and tourists to remain cautious during the Easter holidays, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring  their safety. He reiterated these sentiments during an appearance on a national broadcast, stressing that the fight against terrorism is separate from the conflict in Ukraine. While expressing solidarity with Ukraine, the Italian government condemned the Moscow attack and expressed sympathy for the victims and their families.

Cabinet Secretary Alfredo Mantovano echoed Tajani’s remarks, stating that Italy’s primary terrorist threat comes from “lone wolves” rather than organized groups. He suggested that Italy’ surveillance measures would likely intercept a group similar to the one responsible for the Moscow attack before they could carry out a similar act within the country. Mantovano identified online recruitment as a significant concern and emphasized the importance of closely monitoring terrorist propaganda.
