Iran’s missile strikes against Israel on Saturday, only two weeks after Israel attacked Iran’s consulate in Syria, has led the Italian government to declare Italy to be officially on maximum terror alert.
The government’s national committee for public security, headed by Internal Minister Matteo Piantedosi, met on Monday to assess the situation. Italy has already been on high alert since the Hamas-Isreal war began in October 2023, and this new development will allow them to include the conflicted Iranian sites for protection. Italian embassies in the countries at war will remain operational for Italians residing in those areas.
Many are questioning if it is safe to travel to Europe, specifically Italy, at this time or in the near future. The purpose of travel and area matter a great deal. Italy is far from the area of conflict however, Europe in general has seen an increase in demonstrations and attacks in response to the Israel-Hamas war. In response there has been heightened security for added protection, especially in Italy.
Fortunately, Italy has never experienced terrorist jihadist attacks. Officials have arrested numerous suspects thought to be involved in planning terror attacks. In general, Italy is considered to be lower risk than other European countries for a terror attacks. Areas of concern such as religious sites, public areas and monuments will be have heavy military and police presence. At this point in time, Italy is not discouraging travel so it is a personal decision. Plan carefully, check with your local embassy and be aware of the latest updates.
