August 10th marks a special night in Italy, known as the Night of San Lorenzo, or La Notte di San Lorenzo. This date is celebrated with a beautiful tradition that combines the wonder of stargazing with the warmth of beach bonfires. It’s a night filled with magic, community and a deep connection to both nature and folklore.
San Lorenzo, or Saint Lawrence, is one of the most revered martyrs in Christian tradition. According to legend, he was martyred on August 10th, 258 AD. As he was burned alive on a gridiron, it is said that his tears turned into shooting stars, which now fall from the heavens each year on his feast day. These “tears of San Lorenzo” are actually the Perseids meteor shower, one of the most prolific meteor showers, providing a celestial show every August.
The Night of San Lorenzo holds a special place in the hearts of Italians. It is a time to look up at the night sky and make wishes upon the shooting stars, hoping for good luck and blessings.
One of the most enchanting aspects of San Lorenzo is the custom of gathering around bonfires on the beach. Italians from all areas of Italy come together to celebrate this night in a festive and communal atmosphere.
Friends and families gather around large bonfires, sharing food, drinks and stories. Singing, guitars and even portable speakers provide a soundtrack for the night. Dancing around the bonfire is a favorite activity and of course picnic baskets filled with delicious Italian food can be found everywhere. From fresh seafood and salads to sweet pastries and wine, the beach becomes a feast!
As darkness falls, the real magic begins. People spread out blankets on the sand and lie back to watch the sky, waiting for the shooting stars to appear. This stargazing tradition is deeply cherished. Some of my favorite summer memories growing up in Italy were of nights spent on the beach the week before Ferragosto searching for shooting stars. As we’d lay on blankets around our bonfire, we would talk for hours, joking and laughing as we competed to see who saw the most shooting stars. Looking back, it truly was magical and I wish my children could experience the simplicity and excitement of stargazing until the early hours of morning on a summer night, with their best friends, amazing food and in such a beautiful location.
Each shooting star seen is an opportunity to make a wish. It is believed that wishes made on this night have a special chance of coming true. The Perseids meteor shower is known for its bright and frequent meteors. On a clear night, spectators can see dozens of shooting stars per hour, creating a mesmerizing display. The act of watching the stars and making wishes also serves as a moment of reflection and hope, allowing people to think about their dreams and aspirations.
While the concept of San Lorenzo remains the same, different regions in Italy have their own unique ways of celebrating. In Tuscany, for example, the night is known as Calici di Stelle (Goblets of Stars), where wine tastings are held in scenic vineyards and historic town squares, combining stargazing with the region’s renowned wine culture. On the Amalfi Coast, people often take to the water in small boats, enjoying the meteor shower from the tranquil sea. In Rome, open-air events and cultural performances are organized, bringing the city’s rich history and vibrant nightlife into the celebration.
The Night of San Lorenzo is a magical experience that leaves a lasting impression on all who participate.
