Liverpool has announced that they have officially signed Federico Chiesa for 4 years for an initial $13.3 million. An additional $3.3 million can be added based upon results of Premier League and Champions League. Overall, his contract with Liverpool will be consistent with the he pay received at Juventus, about $55 million, proving Chiesa is still considered to be in his prime and a fierce competitor. Twenty-six year old Chiesa is considered to be the first Italian international winger to sign for Liverpool’s new regime as an outfielder.
Chiesa had also been in negotiations to transfer to Barcelona earlier in the month which were not successful. This would have been the fourth and last year of Chiesa’s contract with Juventus, during which time he suffered several injuries including his ACL.
Chiesa has stated his anticipation to play for Liverpool, noting the fans and moving to Anfield. “I am so happy to be a Liverpool player,” Chiesa stated on the Liverpool website. “When [sporting director] Richard Hughes called me and he said, ‘Do you want to join Liverpool?’ – and the coach called me – I said yes immediately because I know the history of this club, I know what it represents to the fans. I’m so happy and I can’t wait to get started.”
