Recently, Detroit welcomed a rejuvenation of its cherished monument honoring the legendary Italian poet, Dante Alighieri. This near-century-old tribute was lovingly restored thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Consulate of Italy in Detroit and the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan. Nestled on the picturesque Belle Isle, near Shed 12, the monument now shines brighter than ever, reflecting the enduring legacy of a literary giant.
The unveiling ceremony was a vibrant celebration, filled with camaraderie and a shared love for Alighieri’s profound impact on literature and language. Consul Allegra Baistrocchi was present, representing the Italian consulate, alongside Lia Adelfi, the passionate president of the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan. Their enthusiasm was infectious, inspiring everyone in attendance, including dedicated members of the Society, representatives from Belle Isle’s DNR Parks and Recreation Division, and officials from the mayor’s office.
