Cranberry Zeppole with Ginger Syrup

For the Cranberry Zeppole:
1/4 cup sugar
1 stick butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water
1 cup flour
4 eggs
4 ounces whole fresh cranberries, about 1 cup
Olive oil for frying

For the Ginger Sugar:

1/4 coarsely chopped crystallized ginger
1/2 cup sugar

For the Cranberry Syrup:

2 cups cranberries
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
2-4 pieces crystallized ginger, about 2 ounces
