7 of the Best Tours of Rome

Tours are a great way to experience a new place while being guided by an expert. Here are some of Rome's best.

Rome is one of the most popular places in Italy to visit. With so many historical sights to see, it can be overwhelming for travelers. To make your trip a little easier, here is a list of some of the best tours Rome has to offer.

1. Welcome to Rome: Twilight Stroll

Rome at Night

Rome’s most popular attractions are often packed with tourists during the day, and it’s hard to take in the sights when you are bumping into people every few steps. This twilight tour will take you to the top tourist locations with the benefit of fewer crowds. The tour starts at 5 p.m. and runs for 2 1/2 hours. The tour only allows 20 people at a time and will take you to the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, and some ancient ruins.

2. Colosseum Underground Tour with Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Colosseum

This tour runs about 4 hours, but it will give you access to parts of the Colosseum that the public doesn’t get to see. Your tour guide will walk you down the tunnels the gladiators walked as they waited for their turn in the arena. Afterward, you will see Rome’s Senate house and the Arch of Constantine. The tour ends at Palatine Hill, where Rome supposedly began.

3. Crypts, Bones, and Catacombs: An Underground Tour of Rome

Catacombs

For those tourists who are looking for something a little darker, this tour is for you. Not only do you have access to the catacombs but also Rome’s Capuchin Crypt, a chapel covered in the bones of ancient friars. Participants will also visit the Roman Aqueducts and the Appian Way. The tour lasts about 3 1/2 hours, with transport provided to and from the site.

4. Rome Food Tour with Pizza-Making, Trattoria Tasting, and Gelato

Gelato

What is an Italian visit with food? The food tour starts off in Rome’s old Jewish Ghetto, where you will taste traditional Italian starters. This is followed up with a visit to a local pizzeria where you will make your own dish. The tour ends with a walk through the city with some gelato. The tour allows only 12 people to attend and starts at 5:30 p.m. The whole excursion will take about 3 1/2 hours.

5. Rome as a Local: Hidden Gems and Ancient Wonders

Roman Ghetto

Sometimes it’s best to break away from the crowds and visit places only the locals frequent. This 3 1/2 morning tour takes visits to the Teatro di Marcello, also known as The Jewish Colosseum, Tiber Island, Santa Cecilia Basilica, and many other locations. With groups of only 15, you will be able to enjoy the peace and quiet these undiscovered locations have to offer.

6. Vatican Museums Night Tour with Sistine Chapel
