Italian Athletes Face-Off Sunday For the Championship Game

Today, Italian-Americans are facing off in the championship game of the San Francisco 49ers vs the Detroit Lions. Let's dive into their background before the game starts.

San Francisco 49ers

Nick Bosa

You either know him from his indomitable presence on the football field or you know him from the SKIM’s Men campaign. Bosa is from a football loving, Italian family alongside his brother who is also in the NFL. Despite the media only focusing on their great grandfather who was involved in Chicago’s crime Syndicate, the Bosa family has a long lineage of playing in the league. Their father, uncle and cousin all had successful careers as NFL players and their hardworking and dedication has trickled down through generations.

Jon Feliciano

Jon Feliciano is the center for the San Francisco 49ers. Mostly known for his Puerto Rican descent, Feliciano’s mother is of Sicilian descent as well. Feliciano has had an extensive career in the sport, it is said that as a child he had little to no interest in football and liked designing, video games, and basketball. Throughout his childhood, it is said that Feliciano’s mother battled with cancer, and his brother had health challenges that caused financial and emotional strain on the family. But despite his hardships, Feliciano rose above and now has a successful career in the NFL.

Detroit Lions

Sam LaPorta

The tight end for the Detroit Lions, is a proud Italian. He loves pizza, carbs, you name it! Born and raised in Illinois, a true Chicago Italian, Laporta played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes and was named the Knwalick-Clark Tight End of the Year in 2022. He was selected by the Lions in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2023. Relatively new to the league, Laporta already has a historical rookie career.

Alex Anzalone

Anzalone, linebacker for the Detroit Lions, is from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. Of Italian descent, Anzalone is known for his long blonde hair and his impressive stats on the field. He has been in the NFL since 2017 when he was drafted to the New Orleans Saints in the third round. Being named “easily the top 5 linebackers in the league” during an interview Anzalone is sure to bring the heat in tonight’s game.
