Italians, with their love of culture, food and fun, come alive during the summer with a series of lively festivals that celebrate everything from ancient traditions and religious adorations to modern-day shenanigans. These summer fests, known in Italy as “sagre,” or “feste,” are held throughout the country and are much anticipated weekends to appreciate Italian heritage. Whether you’re a food enthusiast, music lover, or enjoy the fellowship of other paisani, there’s a festival for everyone to enjoy under the warm summer sun.
The largest and most famous Italian fest reported in the country takes place in New York City every September. The Feast of San Gennaro welcomes about 1 million people to the Little Italy neighborhood and profits support numerous charities. The feast this year will take place from September 12th through 22nd with events on each day. Fun fact, this was the fest featured on the Sopranos show.
The oldest Italian festival in the United States is said to be the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Hammonton, New Jersey. Taking place July 15th through 20th, this fest will be celebrating its 149th year of festivities this year! As with most Italian festivals, visitors can expect amazing food, entertainment, games and fireworks after a beautiful procession honoring a revered religious figure.
Here are some examples of the mouth watering food you can expect to find at an Italian fest, as well as a directory of all the Italian fests held throughout the summer throughout the United States.
