Brothers Frank, Edward and Joseph Marra were all born and raised near Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. Their parents, Carmelina and Arturo Marra, both emigrated from the Provincia di Salerno.
The three brothers all served proudly for nearly five years in the U.S. Army, in different units. Somehow, they not only were able to connect during combat, but they found a photo studio still operating to take the photo above.
Throughout American history, Italian Americans have made significant contributions to the United States military. From the battlefields of World War I to present-day conflicts, these individuals have shown extraordinary bravery, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to the values of freedom and justice. As we reflect on their service, it is crucial to honor the legacy they leave behind and ensure their stories are remembered for generations to come.
The Early Contributions: Italian Americans in World War I and World War II
Italian American participation in the U.S. military gained widespread recognition during World War I and especially during World War II. Despite facing challenges, including anti-Italian sentiment and the internment of some Italian immigrants, these servicemen and women fought valiantly for their adopted country. More than 500,000 Italian Americans served in the U.S. armed forces during World War II alone, demonstrating loyalty and courage under difficult circumstances.
Among these service members were distinguished heroes like John Basilone, a U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant who became the first enlisted Marine in World War II to receive the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary actions at the Battle of Guadalcanal. Basilone’s heroism continued until his death at the Battle of Iwo Jima, where he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. His story is just one of many that exemplify the selfless bravery of Italian American veterans.
Eight Italian-American brothers enlisted after Pearl Harbor in patriotic bravery and fought for our country, seven of them serving overseas simultaneously.
They were nick-named in their New England town as “The Fighting Santoros,” and they set a record for having one of the highest number of siblings in one family to serve in war at the same time.
Ten brothers and seven sisters, the children of Eugene and Concetta Santoro, grew up on Wheeler Street in South Medford. The Fighting Santoro brothers included Jim, Joe, Leo, Paul, John, Tom, Harry and Charlie. They all made it back alive.
Italian Americans serving in the military often balanced their dual identities. They were proud of their heritage but deeply committed to their American identity. This unique experience brought both pride and resilience. Many Italian American soldiers endured prejudice at home, with some families even affected by internment policies or being labeled as “enemy aliens.” Despite these challenges, their service showcased their patriotism and desire to protect their country.
The contributions of Italian American veterans extend beyond the battlefield. Their service helped pave the way for greater acceptance and integration of Italian Americans into broader society. Post-war, many veterans returned home and became leaders within their communities, contributing to local government, education, business, and civic organizations. Their experiences in the military forged a spirit of unity and resilience that would resonate through generations.
Honoring the legacy of Italian American veterans means more than just remembering their service on Veterans Day or Memorial Day. It means sharing their stories, preserving their history, and teaching younger generations about their contributions. Initiatives such as oral history projects, veteran memorials, and community programs dedicated to Italian American military history play an essential role in ensuring that their sacrifices are not forgotten.
Organizations like the Italian American Veterans Museum in Chicago work tirelessly to collect and showcase stories, photographs, and artifacts that highlight the significant role Italian Americans have played in shaping the nation’s military history. By supporting these efforts, we can preserve the rich legacy of Italian American veterans and pass down their stories of courage and dedication.
Today, Italian American veterans continue to inspire pride within the community and serve as examples of loyalty, perseverance, and heroism. Their legacy is woven into the fabric of American history, a testament to the courage and unwavering spirit of those who served. By recognizing their contributions, we not only honor their memory but also ensure that their sacrifices are celebrated for generations to come.
As we pause to reflect on the bravery and commitment of Italian American veterans, let us remember that their service and sacrifices have helped shape the country we cherish today. Their stories remind us that patriotism transcends origins and that the fight for freedom is a shared responsibility, carried forward by generations who embody resilience and honor.
