It is virtually impossible for any individual to hear “Woke up This Morning” by Alabama Three without instantly reminiscing on the groundbreaking show, The Sopranos. Consisting of 86 episodes and over six seasons, The Sopranos is considered by many to be one of the greatest television series of all time. Twenty years ago today, on January 10, 1999, a show premiered on HBO that has undoubtedly changed television forever. The show lasted from 1999-2007, but many can agree that it is a series that never gets old.
The Sopranos was created by David Chase. It reveals the role conflict that the Italian-American mob boss from New Jersey, Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), must face as he tries to balance his family and criminal life. As a result of taking on various roles, Tony Soprano’s mental state is deeply affected which leads him to seek psychiatric counseling. The audience gets to see Tony Soprano in all different settings including at work, at home, and in therapy which causes them to form a bond with his character. Everyone can agree that the show would not have been the same without James Gandolfini. The cast reunited for their 20 year anniversary and also as a way to remember Gandolfini.
The Sopranos has won numerous awards including 21 Primetime Emmy Awards as well as 5 Golden Globe Awards. Although it has been 20 years since it first aired, this anniversary is prompting many lifelong fans to rewatch the entire show which can be found on Amazon Prime.
