The Italians are well-known for the importance they place on family life and it is not just a stereotype that the Italians have strong family values. While growing up in an Italian family may not suit everyone, here are seven of the reasons why growing up in an Italian family is great.

The Love of the Family

Everyone in an Italian family loves each other, no matter what. Even if they do not see each other for a while, they will be there to support each other when they are needed. There is a real connection between each family member and they know they can rely on one another.

Extended Family

In many cultures, the family consists of the people living in your home. This is not so with the Italians as they include more distant relations in their family circle. Aunts, uncles, cousins and second cousins are all considered family.

Family Parties

Italians like to celebrate. Any event or occasion in their lives is worthy of a big family party. Sometimes they do not even need an excuse to celebrate. Of course, these parties consist of plenty of food, a huge supply of wine and lots of singing and dancing.

Sunday Get-togethers

While Sunday is a day of rest in many countries, for the Italians it is an important family day. Italian families love spending time together to catch up with the family news for the week. It is not uncommon for the extended family to get together to share a huge feast of traditional Italian dishes.

The Family Language

Each Italian family has its own unique words and phrases that mean something to them even if they don’t mean a thing to anyone else. It is like a secret code that only an Italian family would understand.

Everyone Knows Everyone

Everyone will know someone in your family wherever you go. When you talk to people, you will soon find that they know someone who knows someone in your family, no matter where you are in Italy.

Family Traditions

Italians are great fans of having family traditions. These are linked to daily family life, specific events, and special occasions, such as Christenings. The traditions are passed down from one generation to the next in an Italian family and this gives them historic and symbolic meaning.
