6 Things to See and Do During Your First Trip to Bologna

Bologna is the capital city of the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Both historic and lively this destination has something to offer everyone who visits. If you are planning your first visit to this amazing city, here are some of the activities and attractions you should schedule into your vacation itinerary.

1. ​Hike to San Luca

San Luca is one of the most famous landmarks in Bologna, so you should really try to see it close-up rather than just in the skyline from a distance. The climb is somewhat challenging but worth the effort. From this vantage point, you can also experience spectacular views across the city. 

2. Sample Bolognese Cuisine

Each region of Italy has its own specialties and Bologna is no different. You should these when you visit the local restaurants. The handmade pasta and regional cheese are fantastic, so definitely sample these during your stay and wash down these delights with locally produced wines.

3. ​Amble Through the Quadrilatero

The Quadrilatero, or the ancient markets of Bologna, are truly special. You can buy some of the local delicacies and try street food from one of the many stands. It is also a great place to buy some mementoes of your trip. 

4. ​Spend Time at Piazza Maggiore

The Piazza Maggiore is the main square in Bologna and there you will find many structures of historical significance. In addition to the history and culture of the Piazza Maggiore, it is also a fantastic place to grab a bite to eat in one of the street side cafes. The square looks particularly special at sunset.

5. ​Visit the Museum of the History of Bologna

You will find this museum inside the Palazzo Pepoli. The entire history of the city is tracked in the museum, from the Etruscan settlement, through the middle and then to the modern age. 

6. ​Enjoy the Bars and Nightlife

Despite the historical setting, there is a real buzz in Bologna at night. Visiting the bars will give you a different perspective of this diverse city. Expect plenty of drinking and music.
