You Know You’re Sicilian If You Eat These Dishes

If you are ever fortunate enough to visit Sicily, then sampling the local cuisine is one of the highlights of a trip to this beautiful island. Here are some Sicilian dishes you should try if you visit Sicily or you can make these yourself at home.

1. ​Arancini

​Arancini are fried rice balls and these are an important part of the Sicilian diet. These usually have fillings and these differ from one region to the next. For example, in the center of the island, the arancini are filled with chicken liver but on Catania, the filling consists of peas, mozzarella and ragu.

2. ​Sfincione

Like in most areas of Italy, pizza is a popular dish. However, the Sicilians have their own variation of this dish called Sfincione. It has a thicker base than other types of pizza and is often sold in markets as street food.

3. ​Pasta Con le Sarde

Sardines are the main fish caught along the coast of Sicily. Therefore, it makes sense one of the most popular dishes from this island features sardines. Sardines are added to spaghetti with sultanas, fennel and pine kernels.

4. ​Pasta all Norma

This dish features pasta in a tomato sauce with salted ricotta and eggplant. It is named ‘Norma’ after the Puccini opera.
