There are many things that define culture, including but not limited to food, music, religion, social habits, and art of a people. While Italy beats out the competition in just about all of these categories, other cultures often claim to have some of the best works of art and sculpture in history. These 5 works of art help to solidify Italy as the home of most of the world’s greatest art and culture.

This painting, although it depicts ancient Greek scholars, is a classic Italian work of art by none other than Raphael. Today one of the most prized works of art in Vatican City, this painting was the embodiment of Raphael’s style and has been studied for centuries.

Famous around the world for being one of the best depictions of Jesus Christ’s final, touching moments, The Last Supper was painted in 1498 by none other than true Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered a masterpiece biblical scene, perhaps the greatest of all time, this classic painting has survived for centuries on a fragile church wall in Milan, Italy.

Although the Greeks often claim to have the best in sculpture, the works of ancient Greek artists often just can’t compare with the skill and detail of Renaissance Italian sculptors like Michelangelo. His most famous statue, the Statue of David, stands among the greatest and most valuable sculptures of all time and is often regarded as a symbol of his entire era.

4. The Mona Lisa

By far the most famous of any of da Vinci’s paintings, the Mona Lisa may just well be the most well-known painting in the world. Its proportions are not exaggerated, the subject’s expression is curiously smiling yet not happy, and da Vinci captures humanity like no other artist could.

5. The Sistine Chapel

Another work by Michelangelo, the Sistine Chapel is a ceiling-based work of art that depicts many biblical scenes all at once, with expert skill and beautiful inspiration. To top it all off, it was the first of its kind that Michelangelo painted.
