With today being San Martino, let’s have a look at what this day is really about and how they celebrate this day in Italy.

San Martino was a solider of the Roman Empire who then became a saint not only for his generosity, but for his great humility as well.

This day is also about trying the new homemade wine of the season which Italians like to call novello. There is an Italian saying that goes: “A San Martino ogni mosto diventa vino” which translates to: On San Martino, every wine must turn into wine.

As if Italians needed another excuse to drink wine..

Italians also typically fry fresh zeppole and or frittelle on this day which they like to call zeppole/frittelle di San Martino.

In some parts of Italy you can even find people and children dressed up as San Martino in the piazza making music with pots and pans.
