Births have dropped by 19,000 to 420,000 last year, which is the lowest number of births in Italy since 1861 while the number of deaths was 634,000.

The population of Italy as a whole has dropped drastically by 189,000 to 60.25 million. Since 2014, Italy’s population has decreased by approximately 551,000 residents.
Being that Italy’s economy has barely evolved in the last 20-30 years, residents are left with stagnant wages or struggle to find work leaving young people in difficult positions to start a family.
Italy’s economic situation worsened this year due to the pandemic of COVID-19 and little to no help from the Italian government.
The number of Italians that moved abroad rose by 8.1% in 2019, while the number of immigrant arrivals has declined by 8.6%.
