Here are the top four life lessons one can learn from Michelangelo.
1. Appearance does not matter
Michelangelo was in no way ostentatious. He often dressed as a common worker and rarely bathed. When he passed away, his clothes were stuck to his body because he bathed so infrequently. Michelangelo was more concerned with his work than appearance.
2. Always strive to advance your skills
In his 60’s, Michelangelo was called back to the Sistine Chapel by the Pope. He painted a last judgment scene, demolishing his previous paintings in the process. Nevertheless, the end result was flawless, revealing that it is often necessary to destroy previous attempts when creating something superior.
3. Do not solely follow what everyone else is doing
Michelangelo was famous for his originality in terms of sculptures. For example, Michelangelo’s David appeared dramatically different from previous statues of David. His statue displayed characteristics of masculinity, courage, and strength. Although Donatello’s sculpture was also amazing, it appeared to be less masculine and it is initially difficult to determine the sex of the figure.
4. Selflessness is paramount
Despite his immense talent, Michelangelo was in no way vain. He only signed one piece of work which he felt was vain.
“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free. ”
– Michelangelo
