Naked Protests: Former Alitalia Flight Attendants Remove Clothing to Protest Job Losses

"We are here to express first of all our pain and also the solidarity for all our colleagues who were forced to sign a humiliating contract" said Cristina Poggesi, a former Alitalia attendant.

Alitalia has been Italy’s national carrier for 75 years but has shut down due to bankruptcy. On October 15, the government-owned Italia Trasporto Aereo (ITA) became Italy’s national carrier.

Alitalia employed approximately 10,000 individuals in total, but the new carrier will only hire 3,000 of the 10,000 who lost their jobs. According to Union officials, those working for ITA are being paid substantially less.

Former Alitalia flight attendants had a silent choreographed demonstration last week. They must endure the financial difficulties that have come with losing their careers. Cristina Poggesi, one of the former flight attendants revealed her feelings by stating, “We are here to express first of all our pain and also the solidarity for all our colleagues who were forced to sign a humiliating contract.”
