1. Fortress of San Nicola, Tremiti Islands
To reach this castle, you must take a boat trip. These are available from Abruzzo, Le Marche or Puglia. The castle is situated on a clifftop on the island of San Nicola di Tremiti in the Adriatic Sea.
2. Castell’Arquato, Emilia-Romagna
A trip to the Castell’Arquato is like taking a trip back in time to the Middle Ages. This is not just a castle; it is a small hamlet surrounded by the castle walls for protection. This fortress dates to the 8th-century.
3. Castello Aragonese, Ischia
Aragonese Castle is built on a tiny volcanic island that has a 720-foot bridge to connect to the island of Ischia. This castle was originally built in the fifth century and in the 15th century it was fortified by Alfonso V of Aragon to protect the inhabitants against pirates. It is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ischia.
4. Belfort Castle, Trentino
There are plenty of castles in this area but Belfort Castle is one of the most beautiful and romantic even if only ruins remain. The exact dates that this castle was built are unknown but it is thought that it was around the 14th century or earlier.
5. Castello Scaligero, Lake Garda
The castle is named after the rulers of Verona who had power in Lake Garda during the 13th and 14th centuries. It is located in a town called Sirmione on Lake Garda.
6. Odescalchi Castle, Bracciano
It is easy to take a day trip from Rome to visit this 15th-century castle. Both the Borgias and Orsini papal families have resided in this castle in the past. It is now a tourist attraction and popular event venue. It was the venue for Petra Ecclestone’s wedding that cost $8 million.
7. Rocca Maggiore, Assisi
This castle was originally built on the hill of Assisi in the 12th century. However, it was rebuilt during both the 14th and 15th centuries. Although the castle is now in ruins, it is still a beautiful place to visit that offers spectacular views over the town and Umbrian valleys.
