There are many different aspects of the character they are playing that an actor must think about to play the role to the best of their ability and one factor to take into consideration is the accent.
While some require the actor to make just a few small changes to their accent, there are other occasions when they must use an accent significantly different to their own. Although some achieve this beautifully, there are many actors who have been mocked for their terrible accents in a movie. The perfect example of this is Nicolas Cage’s ridiculous Italian accent in the film ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’.
This 2001 war film is based on the novel of the same name by Louis de Bernieres and was directed by John Madden. In the film, Nicolas Cage plays Captain Antonio Corelli and his love interest, Pelagia, is played by Penelope Cruz. Others who star in this movie include John Hurt, Christian Bale, David Morrissey, and Irene Papas.
Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of the Italian Army Captain was widely criticized and this was predominantly for the clearly fake accent he was using. Despite the serious nature of the film, the faux Italian accent added an element of unintended comedy to the movie. You can watch Nicolas Cage’s terrible accent here:

He is awesome…Everything he does is fine with me….I love him…
This is not even the worst example of his bad accent in this film.
