Exporting products is one way that Italy maintains a thriving economy. As one of the world’s most industrialized nations, Italy is a leading country in world exports and trade and is the sixth largest manufacturing country in the world. All countries export different goods and products and this often depends on the raw materials available in each geographical location. Here is an overview of the top ten exports from Italy.

As one of the world’s most industrialized nations, Italy is a leading country in world exports and trade and is the sixth largest manufacturing country in the world. All countries export different goods and products and this often depends on the raw materials available in each geographical location. Here is an overview of the top ten exports from Italy.

1) Machines, Engines, and Pumps

Accounting for 20.1 percent of the overall exports from Italy are machines, engines, and pumps. Italy is particularly well-known for manufacturing agricultural products that fall into this category. The value of these exports is approximately 92.3 billion USD.

2) Vehicles

Italy’s second top export is vehicles and these total 8.3 percent of total Italian exports and this is worth 38 billion USD to the Italian economy. Although these figures encompass the manufacture and export of all vehicle types, cars are the major contributor to export figures. Some of the top Italian car manufacturers includes Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati, and Lamborghini.

3) Electronic Equipment

As one of the top manufacturers in the world, it is hardly surprising that the manufacture and export of electrical goods comes third on the list of Italian exports. This industry is worth 27.1 billion USD to the Italian economy and accounts for 5.9 percent of all exports.

4) Pharmaceuticals

The pharmaceutical industry brings approximately 22 billion USD to the Italian economy each year, totalling 4.8 percent of exports. This industry is the fastest growing in Italy with an increase of 16.2 percent in the last five years.

5) Plastics

Plastics continue to be big business for the Italians. Export sales of plastic and plastic products are responsible for 4.1 percent of total exports and the value of these sales is 18.7 billion USD.

6) Iron and Steel Products

Although iron and steel products account for 3.7 percent of Italian exports and bring in 16 billion USD, this is industry is in rapid decline in Italy. Between 2011 and 2015, exports of steel and iron products dropped by a whopping -21.2 percent.

7) Oil

Oil is another declining industry with exports having dropped by -37 percent since 2011. IN spite of this decline, the oil industry in Italy still accounts for 3.4 percent of overall Italian exports and this is worth 15.7 billion USD.

8) Furniture, Lighting, and Signs

The furniture, lighting, and signs sector constitutes 2.8 percent of overall Italian exports and brings the country 12.8 billion USD annually.

9) Clothing

The figures for clothing exclude knitted or crocheted items. In spite of this exclusion, the clothing sector is worth 12 billion USD each year; a total of 2.6 percent of Italian exports.

10) Gems and Precious Metals

Gems and precious metals are worth 11.7 billion USD to the Italian economy and this is 2.5 percent of all Italian exports. However, this is another declining industry and the export of gems and precious metals have seen a decline of -30.4 percent between 2011 and 2015. Italy has a thriving economy and is the producer and manufacturer of many products and goods that are exported internationally. The list of exports is something that will see constant change as different industries either improve or decline and international demand for different goods changes.
