Italian Pride Sugar Cookies – Recipe 🇮🇹

Show off your Italian pride with these delicious Italian flag sugar cookies!

These Italian flag sugar cookies are a great way to show off your Italian pride and celebrate Italian heritage month! You can either make square flags or I found this amazing Italy shaped cookie cutter here! The frosting for these cookies hardens so they can be stacked and transported easily. This recipe makes 20 cookies. Salute and Viva Italia!


For the cookies:

  • 1 cup ap flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

For the frosting:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons whole milk + more if needed
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp almond extract
  • Red and green food coloring


  1. Preheat oven to 375 F.
  2. Start by making the cookies. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl using a hand or stand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until smooth and creamy. Next, beat in the egg and vanilla. Slowly add the flour mixture and continue mixing until fully combined. 
  4. The dough should be soft, if it seems a little sticky, sprinkle with a tablespoon of flour. Divide dough into 2 pieces. Using a floured rolling pin, roll out both doughs until they’re about 1/4 inch thick. 
  5. Using your cookie cutter, cut out cookies and place them on a lightly greased baking sheet.  
  6. Bake 8-10 minutes or until golden. Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. When the cookies are cooled completely, make the frosting by beating the milk and softened butter together. Add the almond and vanilla extracts and then slowly add the sugar. Divide frosting into 3 separate bowls. Add green food coloring to one bowl and red food coloring to the second bowl and mix until you get the shade you want. Note: If the frosting begins to harden, add a little more milk. You want this frosting to harden so don’t add too much milk. Frost the cookies as soon as the frosting is ready!
  8. Frost cookies like the Italian flag, green on the left, white in the middle and red on the right. Let the frosting harden and serve!
